Barking Mad

Barking Mad: a 4000km charity mountain bike tour with two Jack Russel terriers

(Use #BarkingMadSA on Facebook/Instagram/Twitter to catchup on my adventure)

In March 2014 I started  cycling the Spine of the Dragon: a +-4000km mountain bike tour across South Africa and Lesotho to raise funds for the animal shelter, PETS (Pet Empowerment in Townships). Behind my bicycle I towed a custom built trailer (courtesy of Holdfast) with a dog box, so my two, mischievous mutts could join me on my expedition.

This epic cycle tour took nearly three months to complete. I met the most amazing people, who went out if there way to help me with food, accommodation and even bicycle repairs. I cannot express  the overwhelming gratitude I have for those who assisted me.

I did change my route somewhat from the official Spine of the Dragon trail, as my gear could not handle the rough terrain (nor could my legs). After repeated breakdowns with my laden steed, I found it far easier to stick to smoother surfaces (i.e. tar).

I stayed in lodges, B+B’s, backpackers and self catering cottages en-route. A  few times I even stealth camped along the side of the road, when my legs could not carry me any further. Besides being slightly nervous while lying in my tent, I did not fear for my life once. Strangers were always friendly and courteous. Mostly they laughed, smiled and joked when I told them I was cycling from Musina to Cape Point and offered to assist me in some way.

Through the combined effort of friends, family, sponsors and strangers we managed to raise over R20 000 for PETS through my #BarkingMadSA charity cycle.

PETS (www.pets.org.za) strives to empower animals in townships and poor communities. They work with the community to improve the lives of disadvantaged animals by giving them daily meals, warm shelters, regular inoculations, sterilisations and vet care in emergencies. They also re-home animals that are unwanted, unloved or lost.
